The collection consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings and a review of Another country by Michael Joseph. The correspondence is letters between Baldwin and Kay Boyle, it is primarily of a personal nature in which Baldwin discusses his physical health, mutual friends, and his writings.

James Baldwin was a novelist, essayist, short story writer and playwright. Born in Harlem, he provided a literary voice during the period of civil rights activism in the 1950s and 1960s.
